Feed the Machine

How do we recognize the ethical tensions to do with AI? As fears, uncertainties, and possibilities get tied to growing generative AI, there is a need for tools and resources to help teachers and students consider ethical engagement with these tools.

“Feed the Machine” is a card-game designed to explore the challenges tied to responsible AI use. Working as interns for a news company, players decide between writing stories alone or with the help of a new AI. Playing cards is a choice, where producing with AI might help you work fast but come with drawbacks that are not always visible right away.

Playable in about 30 minutes, we are designing “Feed the Machine” as a way to help generate conversation on the potential and fallbacks of AI. As we refine the design, we are hoping to implement the game with educators in various spaces.

The game rules and printable materials will be available shortly.

PhD Candidate
Scott DeJong is a PhD candidate in Communication studies at Concordia University studying educational game design, play, and disinformation.  Currently, his FRQSC dissertation is studying how games and play relate to disinformation practices and critical thinking skills. His work connects creative practice with research to improve media literacy approaches, as witnessed in his research boardgame Lizards and Lies. His past work, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, constructed games on issues of digital literacy and older adult mistreatment. In his free time, Scott co-produces a podcast speaking with scholars and practitioners on the role and design of humour in games. He is an active member of the TAG (technoculture, Arts and Games) Lab, the Applied AI Institute, and the mLab.
